This blog is, ostensibly, a culture review through the perspective of one man. A person with an advanced education and some credentials. (I work in a university, get to converse with many scholars, attend talks, and engage with all different types of intellectual content. I also, have the authority to invite scholars, get to teach philosophy courses, and have published in philosophy and other academic journals.) Despite these credentials, I’m no renaissance person and do not have an overwhelming list of accomplishments nor any real claim on intellectual superiority. The blog, like the author, sort of exists in a middle place. A place that can maybe speak to residents all over the intellectual spectrum. It’s a blog, for anyone interested in the things I also find interesting and want some deeper reflection on the work in question, but not so much that it becomes scholarly or unapproachable.

A friend of mine encouraged me to make a blog. There wasn’t a lot of explanation as to why I should create a blog, I assume it’s because he didn’t want to hear from me directly about my musings. Nevertheless, I thought, sure, why not.

I do not intend to supplement my posts with vast research but will probably do some, occasionally. I’ve published book reviews before and don’t want this to be a venue for non-peer reviewed reviews of books and media. In other words, I’ll try to justify my thoughts when I think it necessary but will more often just be putting my thoughts out as they come to me.

The majority of content will focus on movies, but also books, TV, art, theater, general musings and so on. All of this content are things that interest me for one reason or another. (I’ll try to explain why it interests me). The tokens of each type will be somewhat vast. It could be Criterion Collection films or the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Aeschylus or Anyone who published something worth reading. In other words, pretty much anything I find value in. I’ll also endeavor to add some criticism, but I’m not an overly critical person. I find fault in things but often, they’re generalized or preference based. In other words, there usually won’t be observations about some irrevocable flaw in the logic of the work.

If you read any of these posts, I hope you find them valuable in some way.

  1. I look forward to reading your future posts! Your musings sound quite interesting. My friends also get tired of hearing me ramble on about “random
    things” as they say.
