What’s on tap

While my son slept on me I scrolled Kanopy for something to watch. I’ve been doing this (on Kanopy, Criterion, Netflix, etc.) since he was born on 10/05/24, understanding that I may only get to watch 30 minutes at a time and have to finish the film on another day. This general approach is not something I typically do, but as a new dad, I’m figuring it out and honestly this approach hasn’t been bad. I’ve re-watched films I’ve meant to rewatch for years—Seven Samurai, spent time on a series I never would have made time for otherwise—The Twilight Saga, watched a film I probably wouldn’t have seen unless it was the middle of the night and I needed to be awake—Benedetta, and seen films I put off because it didn’t checkmark all the boxes I was expected to check off—Ran and Mary Shelley.

I’ve also got to do some reading that I otherwise might not do. I’m currently reading The Midnight Library (Matt Haig) and The Beggar Student (Osamu Dazai).

As for music, I’ve been re-listening to several bands I followed in college—Dashboard Confessional, Saves the Day, Say Anything, but also got to relisten to some newer favorite. Daniel Hart’s score for The Green Knight, Caroline Shaw’s (with the Atacca Quartet) Orange, as well as Caroline Shaw’s score for Ken Burn’s Leonardo da Vinci.
